Way back in July of 2011 I made the decision to create an outlet for my fragrant musings. I picked a ridiculous name, asked my friend, Liam Moore (of ODOU fame) to apply some wonderful candy striping to a webpage and put fingers to keyboard for my very first, feature length review. This first post was a review of Guerlain’s Shalimar Parfum Initial, a perfume that had just been recently launched and had surprised me and many a perfume lover. How we’ve all come a long way since then!
Now it’s 2014, a mere three years later and what started out as a hobby has quickly become a huge part of my life. A lot has happened since that first post; I’ve got married, held two perfume talks for Perfume Lovers London, become the Fragrance Expert for popular perfume e-tailer, Escentual, posted 478 times and won a coveted Jasmine Award. Not to mention the fact that the blog has even been visited over a million times! Of course, this is all so much more than I ever could have expected and I am so thankful to everyone who has supported me in this endeavour – from my husband to my beloved readers. You all know who you are!
To celebrate this milestone, I have teamed up with my friends at Escentual to offer a very special giveaway. The prize is one of my all-time favourite perfumes – a fragrance that I have continuously banged on about on this blog on way too many occasions. In fact, it’s a perfume that I adore so much, I may, or may not own an entire litre of the stuff. Have you which olfactory diva I’m referring to yet?
When a designer house launches a new masculine fragrance I tend to find myself preparing for disappointment. This isn’t always the case (after all, there are lots of fab designer masculines out there), but in a vast number of situations it would be fair to say that the perfumes aren’t really thinking outside the box enough to be considered as worthwhile, especially when compared to their female counterparts.
Sometimes however, a new masculine will come along that does impress and ‘Uomo’, the latest launch from Valentino, is one such fragrance. Taking one or two cues from Dior Homme, Uomo is an effortlessly stylish fragrance that is as soft as it is handsome. For my Escentual column this week I’ve taken a closer look at this new scent from Valentino and in addition to my review, Escentual will be giving away 6 bottles! To read my review and to enter the competition (please refer to the Escentual T&Cs as listed in the piece) please click here.
Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire is easily the best mainstream feminine to have been released over the last couple of years and it has deservedly been a runaway success for the house. This ode to the little black dress is just so much darn fun that one can’t help but fall for it’s delicious, whimsical charm and it properly schools the competition on how a decent fruity floral should be done.
In celebration of the launch of Guerlain’s new chypre-esque La Petite Robe Noire Couture I have dedicated this week’s Escentual column to a review of each the LBDs in Guerlain’s wardrobe, including; La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Extrait and the brand new Couture perfume. Each of the fragrances in the collection are glamorous, fun and blooming delicious. Click here to read my review of the La Petite Robe Noire Collection. Oh and there’s an amazing competition too…
January may not be the month in which one spritzes on a light cologne, but it is a good time to dream of summer, and what better summers to lust after than those spent in the Italian countryside? One brand that perfectly captures the essence and sophistication of Italy is Acqua di Parma and they have four Eau de Colognes in their stable; Colonia, Colonia Assoluta, Colonia Essenza and Colonia Intensa, all of which I’ve reviewed on the Escentual blog for your pleasure today.
What’s more, Escentual are having a little giveaway where you can win a 100ml spray bottle of Colonia (the original), plus a signature bath coffret including Colonia Bath and Shower Gel, Hair Conditioner and Body Lotion (40ml each). All you have to do is head over to the Escentual blog by clicking the image above, letting me know how you take your ‘Colonia’.
This week marks the 2nd birthday of The Candy Perfume Boy! Who’d have thought that the blog would have made it this far? Certainly not me, that’s for sure! It has been a fun two years and I have enjoyed lots of great interaction with fellow perfume lovers as well as meeting a bunch of wonderful people and having the opportunity to have smelled some fab perfumes!
I would like to celebrate this milestone with a small giveaway but before I do so I feel it’s important to start with an apology. In August last year I started a new and very demanding job which, rather unfortunately coincided with the final year of my post graduate degree, meaning that over the last year I haven’t been able to dedicate as much time to the blog as I needed to, and for that I am rather disappointed. That said, I have some exciting things in the pipeline so watch this space as normal service resumes!
As I mentioned yesterday posts will be a tad infrequent this week due to my hellish (hellish I tell you) university assignments, but I couldn’t allow the week to slip by without announcing the winner of my Divine Sample Giveaway. It would be rude not to wouldn’t it?
It was really interesting to read everyone’s favourite barbershop fragrances and it was great to see some old classics alongside some newer, less well-known choices. Anyway, that’s more than enough babbling from me.
A massive thank you to all who entered the Candy Perfume Boy/Persolaise Twitter giveaway. We received a high number of entries for the rather wonderful prize of a bottle of Penhaligon’s rather spiffy gin inspired Juniper Sling.
Well, the entries have been gathered together and the winner has been selected entirely at random using random.org. I can now reveal that the very lucky winner of the much coveted prize is…..
Following yesterday’s review of Lady Gaga’s debut fragrance Fame I thought I would continue the Gaga theme and appeal to everyone’s inner little monster by offering a giveaway.
As a thank you for pre-ordering Fame, The Perfume Shop sent me some Lady Gaga swag, namely; a veil, some Gaga tattoos and two sets of Fame bottle-esque acrylic nails. Now I have mentioned before that I may like to smell like a hooker on the odd occasion but I draw the line at looking like one, so I thought I would pass my Bag O’ Gaga Swag on to one lucky winner. I’ll even throw in a 2.5ml spray sample of fame because I’m nice/evil like that (it depends on what you think of Fame).
I can hardly believe it but today marks the first birthday of The Candy Perfume Boy! It only seems like yesterday that I was tentatively tapping away at my keyboard to write my first full-length review, an apt choice of Guerlain’s Shalimar Parfum Initial for my inaugural post I feel, and now here I am 365 days later with a blog that turned out to be one thousand times better than I ever thought it would be.
Over this last year I have been overwhelmed by the response the blog has received, in that time I’ve received over 180,000 hits, published 194 posts and obtained 3,859 comments! But more importantly than all of the stats and numbers is the friendships and interactions I have developed with my readers in that time, you are priceless and this space would not be the same without you, yes that’s right, you!
So in order show my appreciation I thought I would celebrate with a little giveaway. The prize is a collection of decants from my personal stash and includes my favourite perfume discoveries from the last year. These fragrances have been those that have impressed me the most since starting this blog and I wanted to give you the chance to try some of my “big loves”, I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
