Fragrances for Autumn

I’m desperately trying to get back into the swing of things following the honeymoon but I fear that I am failing miserably! I jest, of course and the truth is that writing, like all creative mediums, doesn’t always come at will and cannot be forced, and that really is OK. I have a few posts in draft that will be upcoming this week or next, one of which will be a scented look at my trip to Tokyo however. It isn’t quite ready yet, but will be worth the wait, I assure you.

Next week should be a full week with reviews of two new fragrances – one from Acqua di Parma and one from Tom Ford – along with some more new and exciting Smelly News. In the meantime, please head on over to Escentual to read my latest column, which is a look at some of my favourite autumnal fragrances (I’ve officially switched to the autumn wardrobe now). As the sun has decided to steal away its warmth and hibernate for the rest of the year, these scents are perfect little warmers in shades of red, purple, orange and brown. Enjoy!

Funk Your Life Up With These Skanky Scents!
Funk Your Life Up With These Skanky Scents!

A perfume can be many things – beautiful, thought provoking, pretty, classic, over the top and sumptuous, to name just a new. But what about those fragrances that don’t want to smell good? I am of course referring to the skanks of the perfume world, and by ‘skanks’, I mean those randy animalic scents that smell utterly beastly when compared to their prettier and more mainstream counterparts. These bad boys and bad girls like to get down and dirty and they don’t care what you think – after all, aren’t the best things in life just a tiny bit unsanitary?

For last week’s Escentual column, I proposed to take readers on a guided tour of the dark underbelly of the fragrance world. Down these smelly back streets, one will find a bevy of filthy beauties that lure one on to the side streets with the intention of ensnaring willing victims. So, if you want to revel in the filthier side of life, simply click here to head on over to Escentual to read my take on animalic perfumes. There is but one rule – leave your soap at home!

Of course, this guide serves as a look at of some of Escentual’s finest, and filthiest offerings, and is by no means a comprehensive look at skank in the fragrance industry (I’d have thrown in Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Absolue Pour le Soir if I could have – it’s more than just a little bit frisky), so please do feel free to share you filthy faves either in the comments box below or underneath the article on the Escentual blog.

The Scents of Sunshine - An Exploration of Solar Fragrances
The Scents of Sunshine – An Exploration of Solar Fragrances

So things were a little bit quiet on The Candy Perfume Boy front last week thanks to a heavy week at work. That said, I did still have time to give focus to my weekly Escentual column, and seeing as we were being treated to a delightful wave of good weather (which now seems to have disappeared), I took inspiration from the great big ball of fire in the sky that is sometimes referred to as ‘the sun’.

My post last week was a little olfactory tour of solar fragrances – that’s perfumes inspired by the light of the sun to you and me. Ranging from the bright brilliance of daylight to the fiery glow of sunset, this piece focused on some old sunny favourites (see Alien) as well as a few reviews of new things too. The stand out of ‘the new’ was definitely Guerlain’s Terracotta Le Parfum – a suitably delicious tropical floral made in the truly gourmand Guerlain style. To check out my ode to solar fragrances, please click here. Don’t forget to let me know what your favourite sun-kissed scents are, whilst you’re there!

Fragrant Father's Day Gift Guide
Fragrant Father’s Day Gift Guide

Father’s Day is just around the corner (15 June to be exact) and it’s that time where we get ready to celebrate those men, whether they be fathers, uncles or father-figures, that have played a huge part in crafting us into the wonderful people that we are. One superb way to say ‘thank you’ to our fathers is with the gift of fragrance. Dads, for the most part, like to smell good so why not treat them to something fancy and smelly this Father’s Day?

To aid you in selecting something appropriately dad-worthy, I have dedicated my Escentual column this week to a ‘Fragrant Gift Guide’. Here you’ll find a selection of masculine fragrances, ranging from the ‘safe bets’ to the ‘adventurous buys’ and the ‘big splashes’, that suit an even wider variety of men-folk. So, if you’re stuck for ideas this Father’s Day please click here to head on over to Escentual to snoop at my gift guide. If you’ve already picked out your present, don’t forget to leave me a comment letting me know what it is.

Winter Warmers 'Pour Homme'
Winter Warmers ‘Pour Homme’

For my Escentual column this week I was tasked with selecting some of my favourite ‘winter warmers’ for men and with the weather being as turbulent and dreadful as it is, I was definitely up for the challenge! My picks include; a new classic from Amouage, a wild card from Dior and a severely underrated scent from Jean Paul Gaultier – to name just a few.

So boys and girls (because, unsurprisingly, the list is pretty unisex), if you’re in the mood for some olfactory comfort blankets, head on over to Escentual by clicking the image above to read all about my favourite manly fragrances for winter. Don’t forget to tell me what winter warmers you’ll be rocking this season, too!

My Christmas Gift Guide for Escentual
My Christmas Gift Guide for Escentual

Christmas is round the corner, lurking dangerously in the shadows, poised to jump out and catch you unprepared at the very last minute. OK that may be somewhat of an over dramatisation (drama queen? Moi? Never!) but it is true that the number of shopping days before Christmas are rapidly depleting!

This week’s Escentual post is a Christmas Fragrance Gift Guide to help you make the most of the remaining shopping days and pick a wonderfully scented gift for your loved ones, whether they be party girls or boys, rebels or lovely parents. Please click on the image above to head on over to Escentual to read the guide, and don’t forget to leave me a comment saying what some of your favourite fragrant gifts are.

I have also contributed three items on my personal wish list for Escentual’s #EscentualWish campaign. Tweet @escentual with the link of the Escentual product you most want for Christmas with the hash tag #EscentualWish and you could be in with a chance of having your wish granted. Escentual will be granting one wish per day and you can read the full info (including my wishes) and T&Cs here.

Movember Masculines Part 2 - Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent
Movember Masculines Part 2 – Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent

When picking the four scents for my ‘Movember Masculines’ series at Escentual, I knew that I simply had to include something from Yves Saint Laurent. This house, which is a shadow of its former glory for sure, is responsible for three of the most exceptional masculine fragrances out there – Kouros, M7 and Rive Gauche Pour Homme – and when it came to choosing the most iconic of this impressive bunch, Monsieur Kouros was difficult to ignore.

So this week I’ve taken a look at one of the most distinct, unique and divisive masculine scents one can buy. To add to that, Kouros is also one of the most unashamedly manly, conjuring up images of overly-tanned and smooth-chested lotharios who are as exuberant as they are audacious. Kouros is the king of the ’80s, and whilst he may seem a little bit dated now, he still reigns supreme.

G is for Guerlain…

This week’s stop on my Escentual A-Z of Fragrance is the letter ‘G’ – and the only ‘G’ that could possibly count in the world of perfume is ‘Guerlain’. Like many fellow perfume nerds I have a major soft spot for this venerable French house and with this guide I aim to take you on a whirlwind tour of all that is Guerlain including the perfumers that have made the house the great institution that it is.

Please head on over to Escentual.com by clicking on the image above and don’t forget to leave a comment whilst you’re over there, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the world of Guerlain.

D is for Dior…

In continuation of my Escentual A-Z of Fragrance, this weeks post for Escentual.com is all about the only ‘D’ that would be acceptable – Dior. Click on the link above to read my guide to the world of Dior and some of my favourite fragrances that the house has to offer.

Also, feel free to leave a comment on the Escentual blog stating which of the Dior fragrances are your favourite, and why!

Now here’s an interesting idea! Dutch artists Lernert & Sander have created a perfume made entirely of perfume samples, 1400 to be exact. The perfume (or shall we say concoction) is entitled ‘Everything’ and contains just about every perfume launched in 2012.

I wonder how it smells? Probably pretty awful to be honest, but if you are intrigued to give it a whiff you can do so at Colette in Paris during the first week of March.

For a full list of the fragrances included in ‘Everything’ click here and for more details on Lernert & Sander click here.
