I’m still on my extended Christmas break (how lovely, I know) so usual Candy Perfume Boy programming will resume on Monday. Until then, I’m sharing my latest Escentual column with you, which is all about odd notes. We’re used to talking about top notes, heart notes and base notes, but what do we mean by odd notes? Well odd notes are those novel accords that evoke things that we don’t usually associate with perfume, the likes of; popcorn, absinth and wasabi, to name just a view. So as promised earlier this week, I’m going to be taking a short blogging break until Friday 30 December 2016, when I’ll be brining you The Candies 2016. So I wanted to just wish you all a very Merry Christmas and if you’re not celebrating, a happy Holidays and a wonderful new year. But before I go, I have two things to direct you to. This year more than any other, the Christmas season really feels like it has snuck up on us. At this present moment in time I haven’t purchased a single gift! Shocking, I know! Luckily I’m a bit more organised on the gift guide front than I am with my own present purchasing. This Christmas I will be brining you two gift guides, the first of which is featured as my Escentual column this week. In my column, I take a look at some luxurious fragrance gifts, including limited edition perfumes, bath products and smelly things for the home. This is a guide for the scent-addicts in your lives and those that adore luxury that doesn’t necessarily break the bank! Extra, extra, read all about it! Legendary Japanese-French fashion brand Comme des Garçons launch awesome new fragrance. Rumour has it that iconic beauty e-tailer Escentual are stocking said fragrance. A representative from Escentual (me) says “OMG IT SMELLS SO GOOD I’M GONNA DIE”. Terror and panic is expected today as people rush to get their noses on this new treat. We at The Candy Perfume Times will be on the scene and will keep you updated.
That’s what I would write if I were an old-timey reporter, anyway. In my review of Blackpepper I say that it is my favourite thing I’ve reviewed for Escentual this year and that’s a stone cold fact. Blackpepper is innovative and fascinating, just like most things from CDG, and it also smells bloody lovely so you owe it to yourself to check it out. Click here to read my review.
Juliette Has a Gun is an excellent example of how a niche brand should operate. The fragrances, for the most part, are interesting and well-composed, not to mention the fact that they are affordable and served with a generous helping of wit! The brand’s Luxury Collection however, is somewhat more serious but what it lacks in humour, it certainly makes up for in quality. The three fragrances in the collection range each present the note of tuberose in an unusual way, ranging from transparent orientalism to ’80s decadence and modern austerity. In terms of presentation, Italian brand The Merchant of Venice have nailed it. Their flacons perfectly celebrate Murano glass with deigns that range from the sublime to the quirky. They are simply beautiful objects but what about the juice inside these gorgeous bottles? Well, across their two collections, The Merchant of Venice offers well-composed and wearable scents that may not rock the boat, but do smell intriguing enough to warrant further sniffing.
