I had a bit of a strange, fragrance-related realisation this week, specifically that Thierry Mugler’s Angel is my favourite perfume. Sure, I’ve always said that I could never be tied down to a single perfume and whilst I have a top 5, when asked, I always say that I simply couldn’t narrow my perfume love to just one fragrance. Also I’m well aware that I regularly bang on about the sentimental importance of Angel’s sister scent, Alien – so it’s easy to see why I would not be a good poster boy for fragrant monogamy. All of that said, Angel is always the perfume that I come back to, and it’s the only fragrance that I can wear for weeks on end without thinking of anything else.

But what spurred this realisation, I hear you ask? Well, I had a serendipitous encounter at a rather wonderful Mugler event that affirmed Angel in her personal number one status. It’s not every day that I get asked to attend a tea party with a supermodel AND the creator of my favourite fragrance, but it is something I certainly could get used to, and I simply couldn’t turn down Thierry Mugler’s offer of hanging with perfumer Olivier Cresp and model Georgia May Jagger, to celebrate Jagger’s position as the new face of Mugler’s signature fragrance.

Hosted in a private suite at the surprisingly inconspicuous Sanderson Hotel (looks like a tower block on the outside and a Dalí-esque play house on the inside, complete with cosmic lift), the tea party staged an ode to Angel, to Mugler, to Oliver Cresp and to Georgia May Jagger. We were treated to a visual history of the fragrance and of Mugler’s fashion, viewing some of his most famous catwalk shows filled with supermodels, actresses and radiant muses draped in Mugler couture – an abundance of waspish waists and structured shoulders were to be seen. It was all very glam, dahling.

Earth, Water, Wind, Fire and the Divine Light – Elemental Scents

One of my favourite films is Luc Besson’s 1997 futuristic sci-fi ‘The Fifth Element’ – a look at the future through a French lens. I love everything about this film, from the Jean Paul Gaultier-designed costumes to Chris Tucker’s bizarre, yet engaging performance as a camp and sexually confusing radio-host. I even don’t mind the sight of Bruce Willis in a vest (Gaultier, of course), but that’s a less important fact, and one that I’m sure you will judge me for later.

I watched the film recently and whilst delving into Besson’s pre-apocalyptic vision of the future, my mind turned to perfume, as it so often does. If you’ve not watched The Fifth Element, firstly shame on you, but secondly, it is essentially a film about saving the world by gathering together the four fundamental elements (earth, water, wind and fire), along with the elusive fifth element (Milla Jovovich) to create the Divine Light and destroy the Great Evil. Sounds pretty fab, huh?

Smelly News: Thierry Mugler to Launch Limited Edition Angel Glamorama

“A sexy and glam-rock star is born, in the image of Georgia May Jagger, the new face of Angel.”

This October, renegade fashion brand and purveyor of olfactory marvels, Thierry Mugler will launch a limited collector’s edition of their flagship fragrance, Angel. Entitled ‘Angel Glamorama’, the limited edition bottle (the juice remains the same as the original) has been created to celebrate the inauguration of model, Georgia May Jagger as the new face of Angel.

Housed within a black lacquer bottle adorned with a shower of star-like blue sparkles, the Angel Glamorama edition is described as being “like a star plucked from the milky way” and displays the perfume in an entirely more edgy and glam-rock aesthetic. The Angel Glamorama edition will be refillable, enabling the consumer to top-up their fragrance via the Angel Source or via a refill bottle.

Celebrate Good Times, Come On! – The Candy Perfume Boy’s Third Birthday Giveaway

Way back in July of 2011 I made the decision to create an outlet for my fragrant musings. I picked a ridiculous name, asked my friend, Liam Moore (of ODOU fame) to apply some wonderful candy striping to a webpage and put fingers to keyboard for my very first, feature length review. This first post was a review of Guerlain’s Shalimar Parfum Initial, a perfume that had just been recently launched and had surprised me and many a perfume lover. How we’ve all come a long way since then!

Now it’s 2014, a mere three years later and what started out as a hobby has quickly become a huge part of my life. A lot has happened since that first post; I’ve got married, held two perfume talks for Perfume Lovers London, become the Fragrance Expert for popular perfume e-tailer, Escentual, posted 478 times and won a coveted Jasmine Award. Not to mention the fact that the blog has even been visited over a million times! Of course, this is all so much more than I ever could have expected and I am so thankful to everyone who has supported me in this endeavour – from my husband to my beloved readers. You all know who you are!

To celebrate this milestone, I have teamed up with my friends at Escentual to offer a very special giveaway. Smelly News: “Beware of Angels” – Georgia May Jagger for Thierry Mugler’s Angel

So I may be the very last person to share this news, but as a die-hard Mugler fan I couldn’t ignore the extra-terrestrial fragrance house’s brand spanking new ad campaign for their flagship fragrance, Angel, starring none other than model, Georgia May Jagger. Now the astute among you will note that there is a strong family link between Miss Jagger and Angel, and that is the fact that her Glamazon mother, Jerry Hall starred as the face of Mugler’s flagship perfume in the early ’90s.

For 2014’s campaign, Mugler are moving away from the seductive and sultry image of Eva Mendes to a more rebellious and rocky aesthetic with Georgia May. They have seen fit to resurrect the old (and fabulous) tagline “beware of angels” (another nod to Jerry Hall) almost as a warning for unsuspecting consumers – this is a serious perfume that will knock one’s socks off, after all. I think it’s all rather fabulous.

Oh I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside – 5 Perfumes for the Beach

It’s really heating up here in the Kingdom of the United. Friday was the hottest day of the year so far, with the mercury making its way up to a rather scorching 27ºC (that’s 80ºF to my American counterparts). I spent the day soaking up the sun at Wireless festival, enjoying the melodic tones of Pharrell Williams and the egotistical rants of Kanye West. Many people however, would have flocked to the coast to top up their Vitamin D levels on one of the countries many beaches.

I do love a good beach, but I must admit that I am not a fan of sunbathing – my short attention span makes sure of that (it’s so short, in fact, that it’s a miracle that I managed to make it to the end of that last sentence). Thankfully for me, Britain offers an array of coastlines ranging from the full-on seaside resorts, complete with candy floss, beach huts and donkey rides to the abandoned sand dunes of almost-forgotten beaches in the farthest corners of the country.

In this piece, I take a look at some of my favourite seaside perfumes. Fragrances that are evocative of the beach, whether that be the hot sands of an exotic getaway or the cold shingle of a British seaside town – there’s even a fragrance that conjures up the image of an alien landscape – a beach on the planet Venus. So pack your sunglasses and your bucket and spade, ’cause we’re going on a short summer holiday and a scented tour of the world’s smelliest beaches.

Candy Stripe Couture – Thierry Mugler Angel Eau Sucrée Perfume Review

Every summer, the fiercely innovative fashion and fragrance house of Thierry Mugler launches lighter, more ‘heat-friendly’ versions of their popular Angel and Alien fragrances. Usually, these limited editions see Mugler’s celestial beings draped in fruits, flowers or a delightful combination of both. This year however, is a bit different and instead of creating a limited edition summer flanker for Alien, the brand has decided to launch a permanent edition to the collection in the form of Alien Eau Extraordinaire.

This year’s Angel flanker is also a break from tradition and instead of showcasing the brand’s flagship fragrance drenched in floral or fruit waters, Mugler has opted for a summer fragrance that celebrates our dear Angel’s gourmand signature, albeit in a lighter, more dreamy and delicate way. This perfume is called Angel Eau Sucrée and believe me when I say that it is utterly delicious.

Angel Eau Sucrée is described by Thierry Mugler as being “a new ode to indulgence”, and whilst is is instantly recognisable as ‘Angel‘ it most definitely approaches the world’s first oriental gourmand from a different angle – one where the shimmering particles of sugar are evocative of twinkling starlight and the fluffy clouds of whipped meringue are the plushest, most luxurious fabric known to man. If the sweet shops on Planet Mugler all smell this good, then send me into space with a one-way ticket.

Perfume Pic of the Week No.15: My Top 5

I’ve always done everything to excess. My mother often tells me that as a kid, I had no off switch when it come to noise and food. Not much has changed since my formative years except for the fact that perfume has now become the outlet for my excessive personality (although I still have time for noise and food), meaning that over the period of time for which I’ve been interested in the subject, I’ve amassed quite a collection of scents.

Having lots of perfume is a good thing, after all, variety is the spice of life, as they say. But it can also be suffocating at times and the sheer thought of there being so much fragrance not being used in my house can be quite unsettliung. It’s a strange balance to strike – one wants variety, but at the same time it can pay to have a more selective approach to what perfumes one wears.

If anyone asks me whether I have a top five perfumes (or a top ten/twenty-five etc), my stock answer is always a definite; “oh, there’s no way I could only pick five”. But the truth is that this has changed over the last year or so and I do feel that I can now quite easily pick out some of my all-time favourites from the many bottles that sit neatly in boxes under my bed or are scattered untidily around the house.

So, to challenge myself, I have put together a list of my top five fragrances – five perfumes that I simply could not live without and if I had to hand over my collection (begrudgingly, of curse), these would be the ones that would stay. They are the non-negotiables and range from the ‘old faithfuls’ to more recent loves. But whether they are new additions or trusty friends, these are the five perfumes that I simply could not do without, right now… (they are subject to change, of course).

Perfume Pic of the Week No.13: Angel Eau Sucrée by Thierry Mugler

Operation Big Fat Gay Wedding is now in full force (although now that same-sex marriage is officially legal in the UK we are simply referring to it as ‘the wedding’. Marriage is marriage after all). This Saturday marked 6 weeks until the big day and both Nigel and I are three parts excited, two parts nervous and five parts stressed (hence very few posts last week). Thankfully last Friday, my most wedding organisation induced day of stress so far, was made infinitely better by a surprise delivery from Thierry Mugler.

Now it’s no secret that Mugler is one of my all-time favourite fragrance brands and I am a long-time devotee of Angel, Alien and Womanity. So the news of a entirely new interpretation of Thierry Mugler’s iconic Angel (my beloved olfactory drag queen) was very welcome indeed. As were the lovely meringues that accompanied it, which I am ashamed to admit I have gorged on all weekend, despite the fact that I am supposed to be on a pre-wedding diet…
