Perfume Pic of the Week No.13: Angel Eau Sucrée by Thierry Mugler

Operation Big Fat Gay Wedding is now in full force (although now that same-sex marriage is officially legal in the UK we are simply referring to it as ‘the wedding’. Marriage is marriage after all). This Saturday marked 6 weeks until the big day and both Nigel and I are three parts excited, two parts nervous and five parts stressed (hence very few posts last week). Thankfully last Friday, my most wedding organisation induced day of stress so far, was made infinitely better by a surprise delivery from Thierry Mugler.

Now it’s no secret that Mugler is one of my all-time favourite fragrance brands and I am a long-time devotee of Angel, Alien and Womanity. So the news of a entirely new interpretation of Thierry Mugler’s iconic Angel (my beloved olfactory drag queen) was very welcome indeed. As were the lovely meringues that accompanied it, which I am ashamed to admit I have gorged on all weekend, despite the fact that I am supposed to be on a pre-wedding diet…

This limited edition summer perfume is called Angel Eau Sucrée and as its candy-striped packaging hints, it is billed as “a new ode to indulgence” containing notes of; red berry sorbet, caramelised meringue (much like the ones I’ve been scoffing over the weekend – my poor waistline), patchouli and vanilla. I don’t know about you, but that sounds right up my street and I’m very much looking forward to sniffing it over the coming weeks in preparation for my review. Further details are as follows:

One thing I hsve always found interesting about the original Angel… and how the 2014 ‘original’ compares to 1992 one is a debate for another time… is that it smells so more chocolate like on black skin yet the paler the person it’s pure fruit. On my “02” complexion.. half Irish but not Celtic.. I can barely get a “button” yet on black friend particularly those with v ebony skin we’re talking full on ‘Bournville’

  I’ve never noticed that personally but I’m sure that ‘skin chemistry’ plays some part in how a fragrance smells on a person’s skin.

I like Angel, and have a small bottle, but it’s just not me. I always wonder, “Who smells so good?” It just never becomes “part of me.” This new one smells too goumand for my taste, and I don’t like berry notes.

I keep it around for a silly reason: my favorite band is Saint Etienne. I have every album, and am a member of their fan club! They’re not as well known here, but they actually came on tour in Oct of 2012!! They came to Chicago, I live in Minneapolis. My DH and I flew out for the show, which was small. I waited in line afterward, and finally met them! The first question I asked Sarah Cracknell was what perfume she wears. She said Angel, as well as one or two others. But Angel is her favorite. She said she loved perfume, and that it was fun to be asked – no one had ever asked her. So I wear it in honor if Sarah from time to time. 🙂

  Surprisingly, Eau Sucrée is rather fresh for a gourmand. It’s not as thick and cloying as one would think.

I still like the original Angel (though I do not wear it any longer) so I look forward to trying this one.

P.S. Stop eating sweets – smell perfumes instead! ; -)

I’m looking forward to trying this one. I was a big Angel wearer for years but branched out and stop repurchasing. I did just buy the Angel Liqueur this year and like it a lot. I hope I like this one as well.

  Hope you don’t mind me answering Candy Perfume Boy… Janene, I asked about this is Myer Pitt St Sydney and they said they get their limited editions out in September each year. Hope this helps.
