Basenotes Book Review – The Perfume Lover by Denyse Beaulieu

Yeah – i would love to smell this creation. As for the book, I hope it would land at my local library. Don’t know if I’m excited enough to own ith.

  The perfume is absolutely wonderful, the book is a bit of a mixed bag.

Thanks for the great review! I have the book on pre-order and can’t wait to read it. I’ve heard a lot say it’s a case of “too much information” but it’s still a must-read for me.

Looking forward to the perfume too. I was worried it would have cumin in it because of the bodily odour references but there’s no mention in the notes, at least.

  The human aspect of the perfume is achieved through costus I believe, which gives it the smell of warm, unclean bodies rather than bodily odour if that makes sense?

Thanks for the review. I am a little bit of a prude, perhaps (?), so I’m not sure I’ll enjoy those aspects of the book, but I do plan to read it as I’m a Duchafour fan and I enjoy Grain du Musc. I may take heed from your experience though, and practice some selective skimming of certain sections. 🙂

  I’m not a prude in the slightest (not that there is anything wrong in being one at all :D) and there were a few times where I threw the book on the floor in frustration because a lot of the overtly sexual passages are completely irrelevant!
  
  Selective skimming will definitely be in order 😀

Eeek! As a Classic American Nerd Girl, I’m a bit of prude in that I try to refrain from putting images of those people I know or are aquainted with having wild monkey sex with each other. Boundaries! But hey, that’s just me, I love boundaries….

  Run-on-sentence—“putting those images in my head, where they tend to remain permanently, and pop up now and then when I’m supposed to be doing something serious….” I’m too embarrassed to craft a proper sentence…!
