Smelly News: Cara Delevingne for Tom Ford Black Orchid

American Beauty and Fashion brand, Tom Ford have announced British model, Cara Delevingne as the face of their flagship fragrance, Black Orchid. Shot by Director and Photographer, Mario Sorrenti, the new campaign shows Delevingne, in true Tom Ford-style, floating naked amongst a pool of purple orchids whilst clutching a bottle of the brand’s iconic perfume.

This new campaign is a more sensual and sexy take on the Black Orchid image, which in its previous incarnations took on a more vampish and glamour puss aesthetic. As always, Ford looks to push buttons, and tasteful nudity aside, Delevingne is a clever choice of face, as she is very much the ‘it’ girl of the moment, traipsing the catwalk for a number of designers as well as courting the worlds of film and music.

Definitely a good move, and an improvement on Zuzanna Bijoch and Julia Restion Roitfeld in the previous campaigns. Absolutely right about the move away from the vampish previous campaigns: it’s a pretty cleverly composed shot, with the glare on the surface of the black water concealing Delevingne’s frontal nudity and the purple orchids echoing the purple themes of the Bijoch shoot. The whole black-purple/pale-white contrast is brought out further with the clean, unblemished, almost waxy look of Delevingne’s nude body… only possible by airbrushing out all those tattoos of hers, of course!

  It’s marketed as a feminine fragrance but is worn by a lot of me.

    Agreed, and I can tell you that as a guy, it is one of my favourites. I believe most, if not all, of TF’s fragrances are unisex. Some probably work better for both sexes than others, but this one definitely works for a guy, in my view.

    Thanks Mike. I just bought me a bottle of Black Orchid. I think the TF Grey Vitivier to be more of a male fragrance
